In 2007 the Naismith family consigned multiple items from his personal collection w/ Leland’s. This textbook was part of that collection. Most know that in addition to inventing the game of basketball, Naismith served in many roles at the University of Kansas (KU Jayhawks), including, professor of physical education, athletic director & head basketball coach. In fact, he founded the KU basketball program.
This is his own personal textbook from a class he was involved with back nearly 100 years ago, 1926. He signed the inside page to identify possession & even included an ultra rare KU inscription w/ the year. Beyond this, he signed it in Kansas Jayhawks blue using a very “true-to-era” grease pencil. It’s hard to imagine a greater artifact relating to the father of basketball & the university of Kansas. Naismith autos are incredibly rare & are the true holy grail of basketball signatures.
